History of St. Vincents East Foundation
In the early 1940’s a group of East Lake and Woodlawn citizens launched a community drive to provide a much needed health care facility for the eastern area of Birmingham. The facility, named the East End Memorial Hospital, opened on September 8, 1946.
In January 1985, the East End Memorial Hospital changed its name to Medical Center East and moved to a new home in the Huffman-Roebuck-Trussville area. Medical Center East, one of four not-for-profit entities under the parent Eastern Health System, Inc., continued to expand its services to meet the needs of the community.
The East End Memorial Foundation was established in 1986 as the fund raising arm for the not-for-profit entities of Eastern Health System, Inc. In July 2000, the Foundation’s name was changed to Eastern Health Foundation to better reflect its function, mission and area of service.
In July 2007, the three Eastern Health System hospitals became part of St. Vincent’s Health System. As such, each facility changed its name to better reflect its association with St. Vincent’s. Medical Center East became St. Vincent’s East, Medical Center Blount became
St. Vincent’s Blount, and St. Clair Regional Hospital became St. Vincent’s St. Clair. As the facilities changed names, so did the need for Eastern Health Foundation to better reflect its mission as part of St. Vincent’s Health System. On July 1, 2008, Eastern Health Foundation became St. Vincent’s East Foundation.
Guided by a community-based Board of Directors, and in accordance with the wishes of donors, the Foundation funds programs, supports expansion and equipment needs, and contributes to a variety of health-related services that are outside the normal structure of hospital operating expenditures.
Public support of St. Vincent’s East Foundation allows St. Vincent’s East and the other not-for-profit entities of St. Vincent’s Health System, Inc. to address a wide variety of health-related community needs and to offer services which might not otherwise be possible. In this manner, St. Vincent’s East Foundation proudly carries on the tradition of individual involvement in the health and well being of the community that was started by citizen leaders more than a half-century ago. |
